BAREILLY belongs to Bareilly district in the northern Indian state of Uttar
Pradesh. Bareilly is located on the Ramganga, it is the capital of Bareilly
division and the geographical region of Rohilkhand. It is situated about
250 kms east of the national capital city New Delhi.
Bareilly is
also known as “Nath Nagari (Land
of Lord Shiva)”, as there are four Nath (or Shiva) temples dedicated to the
Hindu God Shiva; these are located in four corners of the city they are Trivati Nath, Alakha Nath, Madhi
Nath and Dhopeshwar Nath temples.
Alakhnath (Alakha
Nath) Temple is the headquarters of Anand Akhara (Akhada) order of Naga Sannyasis.
Members of this order of Shiva devotees are also known as Naga Babas (Bavas).
